    Recent Trip to Fort Guentrange

My wife and aunt were tremendous sports recently to accompany my uncle and myself to a visit of the Thionville, France area fort named Guentrange. I was able to contact the association members via E-mail who lead the four of us on an enthusiastic tour.

This particular fort was built by the Germans and was not really part of the Maginot Line. It was occupied by the Wehrmacht in WWII and liberated by U.S. troops although I'm not sure of the division. You can see where they destroyed the guns in the photo. I should have taken more pics but that gives me an excuse to return to this or another fortification in North Eastern France.

    Here are some pics.

Simply a fantastic turn of the century oven used to feed the troops stationed inside. A full kitchen and everything needed to sustain the fort could be found inside its walls.

Karl our tour guide during the "climbing and descending phase". Here he can be seen explaining the forts communication system to us in Deutsche. Needless to say we speak limited to no German but we managed.

This is the back of the trenches. Infantry would have manned these and had a good view of the enemy below since we were at the top of a hill.

A look back at some of the fort that was exposed and the trench/bunker system.

U.S. forces destroyed the guns in 1945. We were informed that they were fired by the U.S. soldiers and destroyed on the same day.

At one point the view from here would not have included the woods but a wide open view of the surrounding hillside.

English/French/German speaking Roger on the left and Karl on the right. Notice the decals on Roger's car. He was a teenager at the time of German occupation of France in WWII.
