Last survivor of Azul Avacíon In the Luftwaffe passed away in Spain in March 2020

He passed away a couple weeks ago at the age of 101. The last survivor of the Spanish Azul Avacíon unit in the Luftwaffe.

Jaime Yllera García-Lago, born September 1918, is the last known pilot of the Spanish Volunteer squadron in the Luftwaffe known as the “Blue Squadron”. He was a nationalist pilot during the civil war from 1936?-39. He was 1 of 10+ known living Spanish Nationalist civil war veterans known to still be alive according to Wikipedia. He maybe the last Nationalist Air Force member alive as well.

He participated in the Spanish Civil War but not in the WW2 with the Blue Squadron in Russia

It used to read that he was the last survivor of the blue patrol. Maybe this was incorrect.

The Patrulla Azul (Blue Patrol) is usually referred to the Squadron commanded by Maj.García Morato in the Spanish Civil War. Nothing to do with the Escuadrilla Azul in Russia. The only in common is the 'color' of the unit

Anyway, the Blue Patrol could be also considered an elite fighter unit which in fact provided the first pilots to the Blue Squadron. I think that most of us will agree in considering it as the forerunner of the top unit the Blue Squadron eventually became.

Just out of curiosity, these more experienced pilots got less victories in the Eastern skies than the younger pilots who arrived in Russia after a few reliefs, probably due to the fact that the former were more used to older tactics and had more difficulties when implementing the modern Eastern front aerial combat tactics, while the latter were more open minded as they had barely any experience in real combat
