Spain to Ban “Glorification” of Franco

The Spanish government plans to make it illegal to glorify the regime of former dictator General Francisco Franco as part of a reform of the country's criminal code, the Socialist Party said on Monday.

Franco, who ruled Spain from 1939 until his death in 1975, ordered the execution or imprisonment of tens of thousands of his enemies, while as many as 500,000 people died in the preceding civil war. His nationalist legacy still divides Spain and looms large over its political system.

"In a democracy you don't pay tribute to dictators or tyrants," parliamentary spokeswoman Adriana Lastra said.

She did not spell out what would constitute "glorification".

      Indeed.

I'm curious as to the implications for collectors/dealers in Spain - will trafficking in Falange/Blue Division/Condor Legion items satisfy "glorification"?

Also note that the law does nothing to recognize the atrocities committed by the Republicans and wider Spanish red movement. Mass graves are discussed, and plenty of those in Spain were filled with priests, nuns, and anti-communists Spaniards courtesy of Stalin's proxies in the 30s.

        Too simplistic I feel

The underlying resonance of the war still remains in Spain. Spanish members are far better placed to reflect on the impact, nonetheless I have personally experienced the divisions the conflict arouses in families even to the present day.
What is certain atrocities were frequent and perpetrated by both sides. To denounce Franco is akin to those who advocate the destruction of Southern Generals statues who fought against the Union in the USA, retrospective moral indignation, in short bollocks!

You could better replace EU with USSR 2.0
