The surrender of U-858 Grouping

I'm hoping this is a grouping with a difference.
The following display was based around a plaque of a main fuel valve which was removed from U-858 upon surrender on the 14th of May 1945.
The plaque was removed by RCN Warren Oliver from the Type IX U-boat which surrendered at Cape May, Portland, USA. This is for sale.

Just for your info..CAPE MAY is at the very bottom of the state of New Jersey..the mouth of the Delaware River is located there..on the other side is the state of Delaware..No Portland round here..Portland in Maine maybe..Billbert

In the 90's I went to the Wildwood Airplane Museum to hear the speaker
Captain of this U858 speak. He was ill but sent his 2nd in Command,
name I can't remember. I remember he said he was retired police chief
in his village in Germany. BTW Wildwood is the town next to Cape May, NJ.

I was pretty interested in seeing all the older people in the audience then
to realize many of these had taken part of the bringing in of the u boat.
One man said, most had taken souvenirs off the boat and he took
the log book. I can just imagine all the souvenirs in and around Cape May.

How great it would be if this man donated the log book to some museum
for all to see.

Hi Annelie, that's a great story, it really brings my piece to life. The problem with souvenirs such as these, you never really know what the piece is. But I was lucky enough to know an ex U-boat engineer at the time who was ble to verify the plaque. I still have that letter of course. Thanks, Chris

I did meet a now old RN apprentice who served his time in Lassahally near Lough Foyle stripping U-boats before they were disatches for good in Operation Deadlight.
