A sad story, but for me as a ww2 German collector one of the “finest hours” to do research.
It started with buying a Wehrpass (WP) on the E-stand.
It triggered me to buy this WP because the soldier was involved in the fightings on the KRIM, (close to Sewastopol). A component of ww2 that has my attention.
The WP belonged to:
Gefreiter Kurt HAHN, born 14-06-1922 in Berlin –Charlottenburg.
He served in the Regiments-Reiterzug of I.R. 123
At 20-07-1941 he received the EK II. At 11-11-1941 he received the Infantery assault badge.
He died 17-12-1941 in KUTSCHKI (close to Sewastopol) and was buried in KUTSCHKI”.
In the same week that I bought the WP of gefreiter HAHN, I found another WP with some documents.
This grouping belonged to:
Obergefreiter Albert DITTBERNER, born 23-07-1908 in Vietz.
He served in the 8th MG kompanie of I.R. 123.
At 14-12-1941 he received the Infantery assault badge.
A view days later he died at 18-12-1941 near the town KUTSCHKI, and was buried in KUTSCHKI”.
The interesting thing for me is, both soldiers died in the same area, serving in the same regiment, and been buried in the same town, most likely even the same ‘friedhof’.
The finding of two WP’s in a short period, with this kind of relation was unique for me.
Maybe HAHN and DITTBERNER knew eachother at that time?
During my research I found a interesting “honour list” of I.R. 123. There is a short note about the Regiments-reiterzug. It’s speaking about the Regiments-reiterzug leader; Oberwachtmeister MEERPOHL. The name and handsign of MEERPOHL is repeatedly present in HAHN his WP. MEERPOHL was promoted from oberwachtmeister to leutnant.
In this same document the name of Gefeiter HAHN is named, also his function – meldereiter.

I attached some pictures the soldiers documents, and additional information.
Whenever you have or find wehrpasses / documents related to I.R. 123 and they are for sale, I have serious interest ;-)
Cheers,
