Yes, that's Woody.......he is constantly on the move for the things he supports. I have no idea if he and Brent thought that one by themselves or if I may have contributed in some way to the idea. I think at one time I may have suggested something like that to him or Brent, his grandson. It is also pretty clear to me that he has some of the cards that he gives out and some of the brochures explaining his foundation to people (either to help finance veterans projects or for the scholarships to help educate youngsters or maybe for the other things he does to help), and he is autographing possibly a Japanese helmet. Sometime back he found out that he could make money to help complete the many things he supports by signing his name. Brent lives in the Louisville area and Woody lives in West Virginia in the part just a short distance from Kentucky, so it isn't hard for him to make the trip to the SOS to set up a table there (I used to do it myself except it took me a little longer driving time) and because of his purpose they may not have charged him little or anything to set up........good idea he came up with, wherever he got itOriginally posted by WalterB View Post

Don't get the wrong idea about Woody, while he is not really a very rich person, he does not do this for himself. He has likely a good retirement and he likely saved a fair amount over the years; however, a lot of the projects he supports are either Veteran related or to help youth......or both. Some are costly and he does not have the money to do everything he does. Woody does not take any of the profits for himself, and he is not like some professional baseball players who set up at card shows to raise thousands of dollars for themselves signing things his usual request is a somewhat small donation to go towards his projects and not for him. I would bet quite a bit on that.
I just realized it could be construed that I am chastising you for going after Woody, please don't anyone get that idea.....I wasn't and I thought you were absolutely expressing you true belief when you said it was an honor to see him. That is exacting the same thing I think when I see him.

Hi Ron, please be assured I did not construe your post as chastisement, and please be assured my original post was not critical in any way, shape or form. It is hard sometimes to discern whether a writing was made with sincerity or with cynicism. My original post was 100% sincere. As an anecdote, my friend in the picture had the Japanese helmet signed by another hero a few years back: Jack Lucas, CMOH and USMC. Mr. Lucas earned the CMOH in Iwo Jima as well. Sadly, Mr. Lucas has already passed away. When my friend approached Mr. Williams, he pointed out Mr. Lucas' signature and asked him if Mr. Williams could do better. Without missing a beat, Mr. Williams (and I am paraphrasing here) said with a smile "Of course I can do better than Lucas!!" and proceeded to sign the helmet in a great manner.Originally posted by Ron C. It sure is Walter. I didn't know Mr. Lucas, but I am sure he was special, and I am sure he must have been known by Woody (because he was and is still very active re vets and those in the CMOH group for years); he was Chaplain for many years and was quick to help if any had problems. Also for many years he served all vets needs in much of West Virginia, with the Veteran's Afairs Administration (or whatever the correct name was or is). I am also sure Woody liked Mr. Lucas, because of saying what he said about doing it better than (which some might think was a put down...not with Woody, if he didn't like him he would either have said nothing or maybe I will try), he is quite a joker and speaks his mind with no problem....typical WV country boy (it has gotten me in all kinds of trouble over the years....but it is what it isOriginally posted by WalterB View Post

31 Medal of Honors Winners
Gentlemen,
On post No. 9 when there were 31 Medal of Honors attending a event in Chicago,do you recognize any of them in the picture that it was showed earlier. I think the only black Medal of Honor to show in the picture was Clarence Eugene Sasser who won his medal during the Vietnam War. I also recognized George E. Day standing far right of the group.
Yet Henschel W. Williams is an outstanding handsome gentleman that I seen in the pictures of this thread. I glad he is still alive today!

Thanks Walter and Jay, I was happy to be able to provide another update on "Woody", he is a truly remarkable man. It is also nice that you asked about me, and to answer that.....of course I am dying.......but then I have done that 4 times so far......so it is nothing new. Mr. Death came close to grabbing my butt a little while back again. As you know I have only one kidney left and have CKD (chronic kidney disease), which has stages 1 - 5. 1 and 2 not bad, 3 time to do something, 4 real trouble, and 5 death. I went to this so-called hospital here and got in trouble by mouthing off to the doctor. They wanted to do a chest x-ray, which I questioned. I told the doctor that I didn't think I needed a chest x-ray and that based on my record which they should have, since I had died there before I would think the first test they should do was a blood test. He throw me out. I was taken to Charleston later that evening, they looked at my records and within 10 minutes of arriving there I was in ICU. The blood test they did without me bringing it up showed I was at stage 4 almost to 5. I am coming back again. I guess I am just too damned stubborn to die.
I am just an ole WV country boy...nothing important no longer a judge.......but I thank anyway. I have already made it longer than the grandfather I never saw but I supposedly look like (I don't really think so). He died when he was almost 75...I am now 78.
I am dealing with another computer crash; lost my contacts or mailing list and etc.---------so if you want me to be able to contact you, you can email me at rucksack1@suddenlink.net. I am sitting here listening to the blues so if I make mistakes it is in part because I am getting lost in the blues.
I have another guy working here now so the work goes on......just slower, but he is better and my son is helping him. I hate to give up.
