U Boat cap tally / glue residue

    Hi,

I'm thinking of purchasing a rare u Boat cap tally from a dealer, but the tally has glue residue either ends from when the previous owner attached it an album.

Is there a solution to remove the glue, either ends has about 2 inches worth and it's abit wrinkly and folded but a good price, any tips would be grateful?

    Thank you,
    Neil

    What type of glue?

Some are water soluble, lighter fluid may work on others. Some might react to acetone or naptha. I have used all of them depending on the glue.

Some European glues are extremely tough to remove.

If it is wartime done it is probably water soluble paste.

Thank you for replying Tom, I'm not 100% sure what glue it is as I think it's just modern glue used to stick it In an album.

I've posted the link so you could see for yourself.

        Glue removal

Try warming it, a hair dryer at a safe distance, do not use solvents.
Hot water on a cotton bud stick apply sparingly.

Leave it alone. These tallies are unforgiving. The glue does not detract from the piece. I would strongly recommend leaving alone. Don't expose to heat at all, especially an iron as this will destroy the fabric and if you use it on the threads, it will seriously damage it.
