Ok, maybe I understated the damage a bit

perhaps a bin might be the best option.

Coat it in vaseline and leave it for a while.

Ive had success with vinegar as well. Soak it for a while. 5 minute stints and rinse with water between soakings.

          Ive had success with both.

The medal is too far gone for restoration. The zinc pest has already destroyed a chunk of it and in a few years it will crumble into dust.

Buy a better example while this one goes to the bin

              Is it 'ground dug'?

You have nothing to lose by trying.

Chucking it away may be one avenue but its still a piece of history
                  that they arent making anymore.

I collect ground dug and u may be surprised as it can only improve it.

                    Thanks

Finally someone who understands me. I could never through something like this away even if it isn't recognizable anymore

That's fine but don't store it with other medals.

I stored ot separately, because I've heard the pest can attack the other medals through the air?

                          That is wrong.

Zinkpest is not an airborne virus that attacks metal.

It is the result of 65% or higher humidity.

It is impossible and i repeat impossible, for a medal to catch zinkpest off another medal, so u can store a zinkpested medal next a non zinkpested medal safely.

Research the subject and you will see how silly that idea is.

Im not making this up, its science.

                            Okay, Thanks for the clarification

I will put it next to my Hindenburg crosses

might sound extreme,,, but with a piece like that,,you might want to look in to having it glass beaded.. I've collected dug items since the mid 90s and have had it work a few times with excellent results. You have nothing to lose..
