When we dug through my grandmother's suitcase full of documentation, photos, and other items collected over the course of her life, we found my grandfather's military documentation and medals. I've done posts on these in the past, so I won't re-iterate all that; however, I was very sad to see these items stored crudely in an old case, and the medals tucked in a plastic bag (all together) in one corner of that case. True, some of the medals are reproductions, ordered after the originals were stolen, but the fact is that they represent my grandfather's accomplishments and pride, and they were the medals HE owned, making them all the more valuable from a sentimental point-of-view.
Anyhow, for next father's day (I like to plan ahead!) I've made up a storage/display box for the medals and documents. I got one of those book-shaped boxes from Michaels and painted the covers a royal blue; I then got a reproduction navy breast eagle and ground the back flat to make a front decoration. Some decal letters, representing my grandfather's initials, adorn the spine and cover. Then, inside, I felt-lined everything and made a foam "board" into which I mounted the pins of the various medals (the original EKI and High Seas Fleet badges, being my favorites, I put at the top ). Behind the board fit all of his documents - well, all but the Ahnenpass, but all of his military documents, anyway.
Let me know what ya'll think! I know it's not fancy or hermetically sealed or anything, but I wanted to show my respect by making something (within my skill level) that will help to preserve and store the items but also help make them easier to access and look at.
