Why not just wipe it off?

easiest and least likely to cause any damage: rubbing alcohol.

91% works best.

as for wiping it off.. I understand exactly what he means.
Sometimes a zinc badge sort of becomes porous and will absorb the petroleum jelly, causing it to become significantly darkened.

I use it to degrease items before applying renaissance wax.
