Dont wear or try on ww2 gas masks as asbestos are used in the filters

As you can tell I m very new to this, thanks for telling me, it's a good thing I only had it on for a couple minutes.

There is really no way to make it the way it was. Materials like rubber, leather and fabric decay and become fragile over time. These items need to be handled with care and should not be worn. The mask is damaged forever. Don't beat yourself up about it, most collectors have a story to tell about something accidentally damaged. Live and learn.

Nothing that can be done except to learn the lesson: dont wear items from your collection, they are not toys but old and rare items.
Be happy you learned this lesson with a low grade item like a luftschutz gasmask, instead of with something much rarer and more expensive.
Never clean/oil/restaure any item without first being certain you wont cause any damage.

Exactly. Less is more and restore only when absolutely necessary.

And don't wear the stuff! My wife wanted to try on a gas mask and I told her flat out 'no'. But of course softened it with 'there is asbestos it's not safe'.

You should buy her a mordern gas mask, and a pair of handcuffs and a radiator to go with it

Well **** we've got everything but the modern gas mask!

I suppose you would suggest some Wehrmacht clothing whips as well?

                      Hi,

I have a Luftschutz and a British issue civilian gasmask, both in original card cases.
Have tried both on (very small!) for a minute or two each, could not stand the smell of rubber and the claustrophobic sense of panic.
I would not recommend wearing WW2 gasmasks to anyone, bacteria and germs are probably dormant in these items.
How did people who may have had to wear these things cope for more than a few minutes?
                      Beyond me!

                      Best wishes,

                      John.

                        Hi,

Today I decided to check on my Luftschutz gas mask, all in order: looked through the box -instructions still OK!
Removed the metal filter to screw into the gasmask, then realised one of the headstraps had snapped, totally without a noise or warning.
Rubber items such as these must deteriorate and this happens.
I can imagine there is no way to avoid this occurrence.

                        Best wishes,

                        John.

FYI if you freeze a rubber item it will not deteriorate.

                            Very well said!

Though I thought and expected every self respecting collector would already know this
