Please conduct your own WAF site search on the topic of verdigris, or zinc rot. There is not a complete cure for the problem. What most people don't understand is that 95% of these metals we constructed with very poor metals to begin with. War time produced zinc is made up of a type of scrap metals, or low quality metals which were full of impurities. Many so called cures do not work for the long term and the zinc pest will re-appear gain at a later time. No paste, oils, vinegars, motor oils, wax will stop the metals impurity corrosion.

Thanks. I was just unsure of what method I was going to use actually. I guess I should have asked "Is there a way to stop the verdigris from growing"? I understand about zinc rot. I've dug enough half rotted zinc cents to know all about that. I also understand that I cannot really get rid of what verdigris is already there, at least not completely. I just want to stop it from growing and doing further damage, which I'm afraid it will do, if I don't do something with it now while it's small. I figure i'll take a dry toothpick first and try to gently scrape at it a little first. Then maybe a little vinegar on the pick after that. Maybe after that i'll add a tiny spot of petroleum jelly to the spot for protection. I live in a humid climate so, I already have those little silica bead packets (like the ones that come in shoe boxes) under the padding in my riker cases to help with humidity. I'm all for leaving things in their original state. I buy, sell and collect all kinds of antiques and collectibles. TR items is just my latest affinity. I don't like to mess with the finish on anything unless absolutely necessary. I believe this is one of those situations though. Would you agree? Or would you leave this clasp as is? WWYD?

Rob, I deal with verdegris everyday on metal parts on leather. A couple of observations over 20 years..heat your item. Use a blow dryer..or even set it in the sun. Verdegris gets softer with heat and can often be wiped off. To prevent it's growth it must be protected from air. Even dry air has moisture in it. On metal I
paint the affected area with a dab of clear nail polish. This stops the exposure to air and no verdegris will grow.

Thanks Jerry for this added information. I'm a little leery of the nail polish for this particular piece. I would think a dab of "grease" will do the same, no? Without the (semi) permanence of the clear coat. Will post a pic of the clasp after I get done.

All I know is "air" is the activator of the green goo! Without air it doesn't form. Nail polish..I agree with you on this item but it's easily removeable..Acetone does it real quick. Just a little dab is all that would be necessary..where the two different metals come together. Acetone is actually the best leather cleaner. If you have any luck let us know! Beautiful clasp...

Well, I took a toothpick to it and the green basically fell off for the most part. I also wiped the whole thing down with a little rubbing alcohol. I didn't put any type of coating or anything on it yet. Still debating what to use. I'm sure it will return sooner or later if I leave it as is. Here is a 10x close up. You can still see the affected area slightly.
