When this thread was started I was appalled but I reluctantly must admit, it's a big improvement.

Chris,
Glad I didn't put too much of a bad taste in your mouth! I try my best to keep everything original in my restores. Of course the wood isn't period but the roundel is and things like cleaning the blade- it was already amateurly cleaned by someone so I decided to make it look better so people may continue to value it for many years to come.

the problem you have with your handle repair is common to see on SA and especially SS daggers. When you tighten the nut too much or if it gets wet and expand the wood will crack.
And I assume you use some sort of wood filler, this must be rock hard before you put it together. And as with many products like this I think it has some shrinkage, so put a tiny more on than what's really needed.
Then you should sand the edge/rim that should should rest against the crossguard, you can try a small angle so the pressure will be lower when tightened.
Good luck.

SA Dagger Restoration
Alrighty time to open 'er up for thoughts and criticisms. This is as good as the grip gets, I've taken some really up close pictures of every place I've repaired! Let me know what you think.
If you look at the post with the former/bad repairs, you'll notice that some are now virtually invisible!
