To get rid of the worms: put it in the deepfreezer, -18 degress for 3 days, that should kill´em.

If you have a longer period of hard frost it might also help to leave the boxes outside to slowly dry (sort of freeze drying), inside drying might crack the wood. But they should be protected from snow, but be where it is windy/ventilation.

I would say its very difficult to fill the holes the worms made so it would look decent afterwards, but perhaps wood glue mixed with saw dust of the same age/shade of wood in a syringe?

Whatever you do, don´t use diesel or something like it to get rid of the worms, you will never get rid of the stench and the wood will turn dark.

Oxalic acid can be used to lighten raw wood, and tar can be partly removed with terpentine or gasoline. However all of these have to be used with great caution and at own risk, you might also end up with a worse result than when you started! If the tar is on the surface of the wood it might be easier to scrape off if its frozen solid.
