Help! How to display my wool visors and overseas caps

    Hello Gents,

I've read with great interest the thread concerning moths and prevention of those and how to store your valuable collection for safe keeping but I was wondering if anyone could tell me the best way to display the typical wool visors and caps?

I have a couple of LW Visors and overseas caps and a couple of Heer Visors and I have them displayed on a shelf as they are. They are in a area out of direct sun light and the temp of the room is an average 65 degrees.

I was just wondering if I am taking a huge risk here? I do check them weekly and dust and keep the general area very clean but I was wondering if I should put them in a clear plexi shielded box for display, but that just defeats the purpose of being able to pick up the Visor or Cap and look at it and enjoy it, ya know?

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated!!

    Thank you!

    Matt

I keep mine inside an enclosed curio cabinet in a climate controlled room.
      no carpet.. laminate floors.

I think you are fine.. biggest problem IMO is the dust, which can be hard to clean sometimes (hence my use of a curio cabinet).

some would want to "conserve" the items by not even displaying them... but I want to be able to enjoy my items.

I keep all my tunics and visors out and on mannequins. I do the weekly dusting and daily inspections. No problems with bugs or moths. Having my items out really seems to be the best way to enjoy them. Up close and personal. I think your set up is fine. It is good to routinely inspect your items though especially if you have them out on display......Good luck.......

If you can find an inexpensive stacked book cases set up, and line it with some padding and maybe some red or black rayon backround material, and depending on how deep of book cases you can find , buy the deepest you can find. usually this takes care of the dust, bugs, and sets off a small collection. once one gets past a certain size in collections, more economical ways for display are warranted. you can hang badges, and daggers from the rayon if secured properly. Mylar film cAN be also added for uv, and infrared protection (clear)

            Thank you!!

Thank you to all who responded to my post! I thought I might be crazy displaying these amazing visors and caps out in the open air but I really like to see them and enjoy them and it sounds like most of you do the same.

It would be nice to have a glass cabinet with shelves to display all of the goodies but cant afford that. Anyway, thanks again gents!

Just remember the sun is the enemy, and in rooms where the hats will be displayed you should consider installing clear mylar film at least on the windows, if not reflective to prevent Infrared and UV rays from destroying and fading the material. I used to run a comapny that professionally installed all types of film for glass, although you may have to order clear film for cases and such, I would suggest one for the room windows that had a 20% light transmission , and 80 percent reflective. It is not all that expensive or difficult to do, if you need help have the mods send me your e mail address, and you can ask questions, and I will give you free advice as to how to do it well. If not now, you can contact me later on when you are more fluid, as I like helping folks whenever I can. .

As long as they are displayed uncovered on an open shelf there is the risk of pesky critters. Those little moths that flutter by occassionally can land and lay eggs and when the larvae hatch they start munching. Also, silverfish are voracious....if necessary have a bug guy come an give your house a blast of insecticide to stifle any invasion. Always dry clean your woolens after seasonal use and store in bug safe containers or closets.

                  Matt,

I display all of my headgear on stands by Skipper Greenwade in the open air in my "office". I have mine stacked into one book case, my reference material on the bottome 2 shelves and 3 shelves of headgear and I have more visor/caps/overseas caps on stands on the other display cabinents. I dust the room weekly and keep my dehumidifier running in that room. I have never had any issues with bugs but I also spray outside for bugs and my wife vacumes the house weekely. I can't wait to be able to display all of my uniforms someday but thats at least another year and a half or so down the road. I love having the collection out so I can enjoy it. Matt
