Removal of yugo green paint?

I recently acquired a spare barrel carrier and MG 34 drums that I believe are original and marked. They have been repainted with the Yugo Green. I'm wondering how to remove that awful green without injuring the original German paint? I have read the one topic and cannot find that brand of remover here in the United States. Any suggestions would be helpful thank you.

Green Paint

So, some folks have used a gentle paint stripper, some have used acetone (sometimes thinned out) with 0000 steel wool. I've done that on small battery boxes, etc, with success. I have had a couple barrel carriers that had a poor application of the green paint, and it just flaked off with a nice ordnance tan to be found underneath. But, that is the exception for the paint to flake easily, I did it using a flat blade screwdriver and a razor blade. Time consuming but no damage to the paint underneath. chris..

I used brake fluid to remove Dutch green paint from German e-tool. Majority of original paint was untouched. Applied with a brush and wiped.

There's a slovenian product called lavacol for removal of old paint. But this is an agressive remover, it can remove not only recent paint but also the original one, so it should be used very carefully. Some slovenian collectors use it, but I've heard several stories that original paint was damaged too, so I can't really recommend to use it without experienced hand.

Probably there are other products with same effects. Here's the technical sheet - it in slovenian, but you can decipher chemical components, or use google translate (chemical components see # 3.), to look for smiliar product.

I suppose it would depend on what types of paint you're dealing with.

When I lived in town, some hoodlums came through the neighborhood spray painting graffiti.
My neighbor advised me to use gasoline and a rag. The spray paint wiped right off without any adverse effects to the underlying paint.

a neighbor of mine has used oven cleaner successfully removing the outer layer, leaving the original intact.

I may be out of my lane here but how does one know if they are not drums made after WW2? All the equipment in Former Yugo, including the production of the M48 and M53 was on original German equipment brought to Yugoslavia. You could indeed be removing the paint on drums which were never German, maybe? Please let me know if i am on par, as I have seen a lot of these drums around which seem non WW2 made or maybe I am looking at MG42/M53 Drums?

Thank you very much for the great tip Mine Kriegsmarine E.A. Uhr C/31 was after the war painted in horrible light green which has been wiped off completely very easy so i could recommend anybody to use Mr Muscle ovencleaner

Mr Muscle, not so good if you use it on a helmet with a decal under the paint

I wouldn't use it for such delicate thing but to remove paint like what i did i would say go for it
