Very nice helmet. That damage clearly tells a story. Unfortunately someone probably lost their life as a result of the damage.

i am bad in English but i will try.I use lemon acid for relic condition helmets.First clean helmet with pure water and plastic brush, then in plastic bucket i put destilation water about 10litars with 10grams acid in crystal. After 20 min. under
water with hand remove bubbles around the helmet an each 2 hours repeat
cleaning with ordinary water and brush or sponge until you remove all rust you want. When you are satisfied dry him min 3 hours and put some protected on him
                i use vazelin.

Second picture means that you can put him back in acid until decal is clean

Try with old rusty iron around the house.Be careful with decals they are first
signal when is over clean them only with sponge.
