    Green patina ?

    Hi Guys
    What's your thoughts when patina go's a light green
    Colour In places on nickel silver fittings,is it part of the
    Patina process ? Or should it be cleaned off .

    You are likely referring to "verdigris"-

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verdigris

    which is corrosion of the copper content in the metal.

    Contact with leather will accelerate the formation of verdigris.

    Personally, I would remove it, as it only gets worse.

      Verdigies WILL pit the nickel silver if left in place. It must be removed to prevent surface pitting-I know this from bad experiences over the years.

        Agreed, If you can please post a photo to help aid me in the correct removal process. You don't want to use the wrong approach to removal that could result in destroying something else.

          It isn't that easy as the approach is dependent on the type of item.

            A very thin tinge of it over a broad easily flat accessible surface can be cleaned off with Renaissance (Ren) Wax. I know this because I've done it on an upper SA dagger scabbard fitting that was under a bayonet frog. If it's formed the more often seen small clumps you can sometimes work it off by finding an edge and chipping away at it with a wood toothpick. The toothpick will not scratch the underlying metal. Again, I know this from personal experience.

            If your situation is other than like these two examples then I suggest you tell us the situation and see what advice is available.
