    Double sided tape for flag?

    I just received an IJN flag that is the perfect size for a shadow box I have. The flag, being on the small end, isn't all that heavy but this is by no means a delicate flag. Its a thick linen flag. I'm wondernig if some small pieces of double sided tape (not the clear Scotch kind you see that stains letters) might be the way to go.

    If your flag is of value and meaningful to your display I would never recommend using any tape on any artifact. Not even archival mounting tape. You will run into a host of problems. Problems can be anything from permitting staining (where the tape is placed) to weight sagging of the flag… to out gassing form cardboard and non-archival tape. Once damaged is done it most likely non reversible.
    Most museums mount flags by sewing (very small stitching by hand with a very fine needle, and not machine sewn) the flag to a piece of similar colored fabric. Start sewing the entire flag starting from the middle of the flag working outward to the flag edges. Take a piece of archival (thin) frame mount board slightly larger than the fabric that you sewed tour flag onto. Sew the fabric material (not the flag itself) to the acid free mat board.
    You may also select a nice picture frame matt board, and have a professional framer or yourself. And mount the flag in picture matting.

    If you follow these ideas you will have a very nice display, and you can rest asured you will have no staining to that flag.

      I would concur. Whether medals, flags ... anything.
      Why not find a picture frame large enough to hold it tight to the glass. Less harmful and it will keep it open in the position that you want. Expensive? Yes ... likely, but I would imagine the shadow box isn't cheap either?

        I would not recommend putting any fabric (or paper) artifacts against glass/plexiglass. Moisture can transfer from the glass to the artifact and cause mottling over time. This will happen a lot slower (maybe years) if you live in a dry/hot climate, but IMO it's still not worth the risk.

        The sewn method is a real pain if you do it yourself...but it is by far the best method for displaying while conserving the flag. Many arts & craft stores offer these professional serves.
