    Removing rust from a medal

    Hi Guys,

    This is a very rare TR medal which I have bought and is on its way to me from the US. As you can see, the medal has rusty areas which the dealer has applied gun oil to remove.

    I like things to be really nice and rust stain free, so can someone please suggest the best way to remove as much of the rust stain as possible without polishing the area?

      Very rare indeed! And I would be very, very nervous trying anything, I would leave it be and protect it as much as possible from moisture/humidity. But that's just my opinion.

        You sure thats rust, and not just wood glue. Many guys glued stuff like this in albums with of all things wood glue. water removes wood glue. If it IS rust.....best leave it as is. Dont shine it up.

          If indeed this is rust on the medal (and not glue or grime) it may not be solved by one method to conserve it. In most cases rust is not only a surface issue but appears below the finish. As you may know once you see rust on the surface more rust is working on the metal composition below the surface. Indeed this is a rare item with a surface finish that would show any signs of polishing. Renaissance Wax would be a choice to seal more advancing rust corrosion on the medal. Ren Wax woun't stop it 100% or reverse the rust completely. Keeping the humidity low is a must.
          Of course this is your item to do as you see fit.

            Try with Electrolysis. It works perfect with coins.

              Most solution that is used in the electrolysis processes has been known to be slightly caustic or acidic and can damaged medals that have a coating on them. Such Items like the TK skulls close combat, wound badges. The electrolysis solutions can remove these applied sprayed on color to metals. It's best to conduct your own research before your use this method of cleaning.

                Actually guys, the rust spots came off quite easily with a brass wire brush which didn't scratch the surface at all with brass being softer than iron.

                What is still left are the remnants of the soldering process to attach the suspender loop but I suspect this is weld material and difficult to remove or has anyone an idea how to clean this off?
