Hi folks , I have a large number of german medals and award from under the ground ; including such medals as faithfull service crosses) silver finish on Brass core ) . What is the best method to clean these without damaging the remaining finish left on them ??

Could you please post some photos so that members could get a better idea on the condition of the medals. Thanks...Somebody, after all, had to make a start. I think that this question is very difficult to answer in an easy way.
Everything depends on the condition of the badge or medal that you have to clean. The kind of material and of the oxidation to be removed may determine a different procedure.
For example, about the medals posted by Jimpan, I don't think there's much left to clean. Probably they have been already in some kind of acid that took most of crusting away. I'm pretty sure that the KVKII has been in an acid solution for too long time: the brass looks like new! I would finish to clean the medals with some mild soap and nail brush (just be careful with the swastika's black enamel) and in the case of the KVKII I would use some burnisher to recreate some patina (I use Klever burnisher, it work really well!).
In the most dramatic cases phosphoric acid may be a good solution, but great care has to be taken not to leave the badge for too long in the liquid.Comment

In my opinion, it would be best to actually leave them alone,
and stored in a dry place. Cleaning them in acid and in water may in fact cause more damage.
