packing in cellophane

Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding cellophane for packing equipment (fieldbottles, pouches, zelts, etc.). I'm having a little space problem at the moment, and I was thinking to make some cellephone bags to put my items in and to put them in a wooden or plastic box tot avoid damage from dust and especially insects (I have to keep the window open). Can the components of cellephone harm the items in any way? And wouldn't it be too dry to store it up like this?

The manufacturing process of cellophane has not changed much over the past 10 years. Cellophane is not recommened for artifact storage. I would never recommend use this material to pack anything. Cellophane has some natural plant material in its composition. Some incest such as moths, termites, silver fish and some animals can digest cellophane. It also locks moisture into it wrapped artifacts.

I would conduct a WAF search to find past posting on materials used in artifact storage. I would start with some of these materials for storage acid free paper, cotton muslin, fleece, acid free storage boxes. These materials can be used in a more permitted storage system. Yes some acid free items are a bit more expensive to buy, but what is the cost of insect and mold damage to your collection?

Of course these are your items to do with as you see fit.

Thank you very much. I will look at the alternatives and whether they are locally available. I'm a longterm thinker when it comes to conservation, so I will definately look for the best ways, even if it will cost me a bit more. And if I use cheap stuff now, it may cost me even more in the near future. Besides, I would never forgive myself when my collection gets damaged due to my own neglect.
