    Storage query

    Greeting Gents:

I am a beginner collector, my collection mainly focus on the Badges, Photos/Papers, and Cuff title.

So far I am using a plastic Container and Bags for the storage,
Do you Gents thinks is a good Idea Store the items like this way?

As when my collection grow I might frame the item on the wall for display… but now I prefer let them stay in the Container…

And I also did read the pinned article that Paul mention about that: “ethafoam”, “polybatting”, and “fleece” are the good element for the display and storage especially the “Fleece”.

So is that necessary that I might need to raise funds on fleece, and place fleece in the container as a lining or backing for the display/storage purpose?

    Thanks so much!

    Best Regards

    Joe

    Hello Joe,

well I was trying many methods of storage my items (mainly medals and photos - as in your collection). Safe keeping photos is easy - they might be laying even in a normal photo album (in a wardrobe: there is dry, dark and constant temperature).

But in the case of medals and badges this is getting more difficult.
Personally I storage them in that way:

Wooden cases are absorbing moisture in natural way. When you want to use plastic case it is needed to put there some kind of "absorber" (fleece f.e., as you know).

But I wouldn't keep anything in that plastic "pouch" that you have. The rumors says that this might spoil metal items when you keep them too long there. Maybe this is just rumors but better don't risk and invest in some good sleeves...

      Hi Joe...
From a conservators point of view I would just make sure that what you are using is archival safe and will not out gas. If you are buying cheap plastic you will run it in to problems down the road. Be sure you see a label on the box stating that it is archival safe.
Yes ethafoam and flees are 100% archival safe. The ethafoam can be a bit expensive than cheap regular foam. Regular foam out gasses and attracts moisture into its foam cells. Ethafoam will not do that. Fleece is fairly inexpensive and is also 100% safe. Check your local fabric stores. At times Fleece is on sale for a little over $2.00 a yard. Remember check your humidity should be 43-45% 24/7-365. You may also buy silica packs and place them in the archival storage boxes. They will help keep moisture levels in check. You may also want to purchase a good humidity gauge to help. Keep the gauge within your storage area of your collection.

        Dear Borzadow and Paul:

Thanks for you Gents kind assistance, lot of appreciate !

Sorry for the late reply all the exam stuff has drive me carzy.

The plastic box that I'm current using has a mark of : polypropylene (PP) polymers of propylene ( Paul mention on the Pinned article )
but just not sure is archival safe?

As a student I don't really have strong financial support for the higher archival material... they are kind of expensive... But I will still try my best to preserve those historical beauty!

So certainly I will go for the flees storage/display way, and by any chance can you gents give me link of any online store that have provide:

        1. Archival safe flees
        2. Archival safe gloves
        3. Archival safe Box

I have read the thread that Borzadow provide, but since like most online archival store don't offer flees???

Hope you gents can help me with that.

        Thanks again!

        Best regards

        Joe

          Hi Joe,
I completely understand student life. It sounds like you still want to pursue archival storage items. My advice is to be patience and check archival items at the two sites that I’ll post. I choose these companies because they sell in small quantities and they also have on occasion over stock items that they put on sale.
Check the web also just be sure that they are archival safe. Some companies claim that there item are but not 100 archival. You can use either cotton gloves or latex. Most local drug store carries this type of latex glove. The cotton ones can be washed several times before they will fall apart.
Most local fabric stores carry fleece if not the internet is good. For fleece color stay with the color white, or off white, or beige. Dark colors can generate heat.
I have to say that from the photo that you have posted that box is not archival safe. It may not be made with 100% safe polymers. Here are the two companies.
Of course I do not endorse, or receive any form of compensation from these companies. The company names are Hollinger, and Talas Conservation

            Dear Paul:

Sorry for the late reply I just finished my exam several days ago…

I will check on the local fabric and drug stores see if they carry Fleece and glove.

The two links that you provide were wonderful! I will reorganize my storage system again and will post the image after I bought the items see if there were archival safe?

Thanks so much for your kindness again!

            Best Regards
