    Question regarding case...

    Hello Guys,

I need an opinion concerning the case I use to store my collection. I'm using a case with foam inside, I attached pictures of it. I have read in some case, foam can react sometimes and just want to be sure what I'm using is good and safe. I have two cases, one for the badge and one for the box as well as cloth insigna... Its similar to Pelican case but its Canadian made. Its water, humidity and dust proof. Here's a link to the web site:

    Thanks for your time

    Sebastian,
I would suggest contacting the manufacturer and asking if the foam inserts are archival (acid free) safe.

From what I can see from the photos posted. I doubt they are archival if not you have a high possibility of moisture build up in humid areas

Hello Paul, thsnks for your tips.

What would be a good way to avoid humidity, put a pouch of silica in the case? What would be the best way to protect a collection in a type storage container or something else? Or is there anywhere where I can buy archival foam to avoid humidity?

          Thanks

          Seb

Sebastian, yes silica packs will control the humidity for a short term. When using the silica packs for reducing humidity in the case the packs have to be dried out from time to time. Otherwise the silica packs are rendered useless. Think of them like little sponges that need to be rung out.
Something’s to consider about storing items in cases. A product called ethafoam is best for interior padding it is 100% archival safe. It’s also a good idea to control the humidity in the room in which the case is store in. Unless that case is 100% airtight that case will have moisture inside.
There has been many posting on the humidity issues over the past few years both on the WAF site and on the net. Topics cover both the pro and cons on the subject. It's always best to draw you own conclusions after your research on humidity issues.

Hello Paul, thanks for your answer.

The case it self is made with plastic number 5, and its air tight with a presure relief valve on the front. Concerening the foam, is acid free and they said its only fuel.... I don't know what is that mean but I try to find ethafoam and use it in the same case.... Many thanks for your help guys.

                Hello,

I have found Ethafoam.... Is there a difference between the white and black one... the company deal with few museums and they only use white one..... Anyone know why??

                Thanks

Seb... The color of ethafoam is a concerned in museums due to the fact that black can generate heat (or hold warmth). Most museums that I have worked at use only white. Sometimes but not ways price can be a factor as well.
