Cleaning WW2 German wool tunic

I have recently aquired a M43 SS Wool tunic which was adapted to civilian wear after the war ; i am embarking on a life project of restoration . The tunic is absolutely filthy , some parts look very tired and have been hand stitched back together. It has to be cleaned as some parts you simply cant see the wool under the black grime on it .

I need your help on how to clean it. Should i gently hand wash it or should i have it dry cleaned or other ?? HELP , HELP HELP !!!

After two months, I received my waffenrock in the post only to find it was damaged by water and mold. I thought it was destined for the trashcan, but Moderator John Robinson turned me on to Margaret's Cleaners located in San Diego.

After two weeks, they fully restored my waffenrock. In my opinion, what they performed was magical! They removed all of the water damage, stains and mold, bringing the rock back to life. It sounds like it could just be carefully hand washed as Paul R describes, If it is fragile I would not dry clean it but post pictures, that will help to make suggestions.
