    MothGuard

Gents.....was reading on the internet about moth prevention, and came across the product known as MothGuard. Supposed to be like "Mothproofing at home" instead of dry cleaners doing it. They say it's totally safe and won't come out until you launder the garment....so for a collector like myself or any of you into cloth it would never come off......supposedly......what say the conservators among us? Would this be a viable solution? They say it's petroleum product free and safe for ancient persian rugs etc.....I haven't used it yet, but am seriously thinking about it. Any opinions????

I don't know Don, but I contacted them and asked a whole bunch of questions regarding 60-100 year old wools and cloths, and what kind of a guarantee they offer with the product.....it seems almost too good to be true doesn't it???

Is this product a to good to be true for moth control! Caution
        <O</O
First of all this is a relatively a new product, and there is not a lot of research on it (I didn’t find a MSD sheet on this product as of yet). I’m concern that this product uses water in a spray to dispense its solution.
        Off their web site..

“How do I apply Moth Guard?

Just mix and dissolve as directed in water and use a common garden pump up type pressure sprayer. We use the sprayer that manually pressurizes with several strokes of the handle and has an attached spray wand. Always use a new sprayer and dedicate it to strictly using it for Moth Guard to avoid residual pesticide from the last time you used the old sprayer.

Here are some basic concerns that I have on this new product...
First of all there is really no way to control the mist. My experience is that any spraying is going to travel in a cone shape spraying the solution all over the place. Could this make items glow? It’s a tough call. Will this product cause any staining on materials? Can this product be reversed? What is the human effect from this solution? How effective is product on controlling moths? Will this product attract other pest? All good un answered questions.
I didn’t find any conservation information as of yet. Before I would jump on this product.. More research is needed.

Thanks for your input Paul, I was hoping you'd pop in on this thread. When it comes to preservation, you're the guy I want in my corner!
I know it's a new product and all, and I know we all hear home remedies to preserve out stuff that simply won't work.....but honsetly I couldn't turn my back completely on this stuff.....I mean if proven effecive, imagine the impact! I e-mailed them moments before posting this thread.....lo and behold no answer back yet.....strange. I'd be almost tempted to test it on one of my inexpensive pieces....like a shoulder rocker, and study it's short and long term effects. Might be interesting no?

            Mike,
Thanks... Yes, I feel that it’s worth checking into more. I’m not against the product at all. Just the conservation portion comes in to the equation. I’m also thinking about a phone conversation with them, or there R & D team. If at some point you are willing to do some testing with this product that’s great. Of course documentation is everything along the way. It’s kind of like doing detective work.
Each time you walk into that area observe every thing from the whole room down to the items that you want to protect.
By the way take photos as well. Note thing’s (daily) like room temp, humidity, air quality, surface i.e. dust lint. Items stored around your items. Are they stored in boxes, is there carpet on the floor. Be aware of smells.
If you do talk with the company before I do ask if there is a reversal procedure. In case you may have to remove all traces of it. Good luck! keep us posted on your observations.. Paul
