    Sword cleaning

    A friend recently asked me about cleaning a Lion's Head sword her father brought back from Germany. The blade is period engraved but looks like it was covered in cosmoline or grease. Does anyone have a safe method for cleaning a blade in this condition? At this point it is caked on there.

    Get some oderless mineral spirits and a couple soft cotton diapers. Be careful using paper towels because they are slightly abrasive. The mineral spirits will not harm the blade or the burnish in the etch. You can use a soft bristle tooth brush to detail the etch areas. When all the cosmo has been removed, you can use some renwax or car wax to protect the finish. I wouldn't use Semichrome because it is mildly abrasive and could remove the burnish from the etch. Remember to work at it slowly and carefully.

    Post a before and after photo when you're finished.
