    Washing Tunics Does Work

    Hi,
the other day I was reading a thread here on washing tunics. Id never considered the negative effects of dirt and other residue. I selected an old very worn tunic and soaked it in a tub of water gently agitating. The water turned more brackish than I had thought possible. I rinsed added some mild cleaning substance for woolen garments and repeated the procedure. Dried between two towels as suggested in the thread and handeg out to dry outside but not in direct sunlight. The results were surprising the colors seemed brighter, the rancid smell gone and the material felt softer. I didnt take photographs as I went as frankly I didnt think I would achieve anything. Here is the end result. Have many others here washed their tunics?.
    cheers Robert

      Washed Tunic

I was thinking this was a woolen tunic or part woolen and synthetic fibre would it be feasible to wash an early tunic with a silk liner?.

Years ago I had an Assault Gunner's wrap that was in decent condition but the nap was flat and it was somewhat brownish. I washed it with Woolite in the bathtub, the water of which initially became the color of weak coffee. I continued washing, rinsing, washing, until the water remained clear. I used a lot of towels to absorb the water and kept changing towels as they became damp until the tunic was 90% dry, and then I hung the tunic in front of a fan. After it was finished, it did not look like the same wrap--it was really revitalized and there were no adverse effects.
This only will work for field type tunics--the custom officer type lined and padded tunics would be very difficult to dry properly due to the horsehair/wool padding under the lining.
