    How to display my medals right?! Help!!

    Hi.
    I have seen alot of treads on this subject, but i am very confused!
    I would like to display my medals in frames on the wall, but I really don't know what kind of frames or back material to use. When I say display, I mean for a long time on the wall.. Many years!

    I would really appreciate if you could help me with websites, where to buy the right stuff, because I don't know the Danish names on the materials you mention. So please tell me where to buy the right stuff.


    I want the give my medals the best opportunities for keeping in mint condition!

        Yep, nice frames there, but I was thinking of framing them myself! A bit like this:

        But I dont know where to buy the stuff, and is it good to store the medals like that for a long time. Out of sunlight, of course!

          When storing items in frames for any length of time. All materials should be archival. Some of these items that are linked are nothing more than cheap plastic inserts and wood frames. Most of these wood frames are not archival safe. These frames will out gas causing irreversable damage to the items mounted inside of them.
          One company boast they dry mount photographs. When thinking archival. Do Not Dry Mount Anything. Dry mounting will turn items and documents yellow in time. It also will not allow items to breath. The colored cardboard should be archival. Not cheap paper cardboard.
          If the Mess Dress Company was using archival materials the site would say that. Usually companies that use archival materials will state that thought the site.
          This company http://www.just-in-case.biz/detail.aspx?ID=45 divided tray is a cheap flimsy plastic tray that are known to out gas fumes causing
          damage to items stored in them.

            I have roughly 20 medals and insignia in a "cheap" frame. They've been that way for the past 11 years and still no problems. But then again Im an anti-dust freak when it comes to my items, anywhere for that matter.
            You also didnt mention "wood". Wood will absorb moisture and cause the insides (paper for example) to eat away... I combat that by using some of those tiny little humidity/odor absorbing bags that you'd normally find in boxes of new shoes.
            Point is I like to maintain my items and keep the cases, glass and matting clean. I cannot say the same for alot of the photos Ive seen on here of people showing their stuff while its covered in an inch of dust.

              Chris.. Wood that is stained with an oil finsih can out gas and bleed out oils. Even unpainted wood can out gas. If the wood contains tanic acid the tanic acid can leech out( black walnut, oaks, pine, elder, and birch). Yes, the nay Sayers will tell that nothing will happen to your items.
              Of course these items are your do do with as you see fit

                I've had medals and badges displayed in wooden cases for almost 40 years................they're still in the same condition as when they were put in.

                One of the cases I made myself at school.............so it certainly isn't 'archival'.

                I touched a sword blade 30 years ago.............it hasn't rusted away yet.

                    Here's one of my displayes as an example:
                    Normally I try and make the medal mountings as temporary as possible so I can remove them easily; either to replace or just inspect/fondle.

                      I would be concerned with the medals resting on ribbons. The medals can produce corrosion or leech zinc pest smutz. It happends with humidity or not. Your ribbons will also suffer a hard fold breaking down the cloth fibers.
                      I would also be concerned with a wood frame out gasing on to your money, or medals. IMO the frame doesn't look like an acidfree mount??
                      Of course these are your things to do with as yiu see fit..
