My point is why with so many other lids out there with no paint no liner and no name out there did you feel the need to take one that had all these and make look like a good repo!hell iv 2 post war used lids that have been stripped post war and would have been perfect for this!the history of that lid is now gone!you wouldnt paint a war badge silver so why a lid!

Well thats your point of view, his point of view was that it wasn't worth keeping as it was and it's his lid so he can do what he likes with it and in 150 years if any one is still interested in WW11 his preserved lid will still be around which is probably more than you can say if it was left to rust away as it was.I can't understand why people get upset over this lid when you look at all these preserved vehicles that most people love to see(myself included),yet how many of these were once rusty wrecks.Having said that I don't think I would have restored this particular helmet but I would not have bought it in the first place.Regards Hans.

From: The Wartimes Journal: Collecting Militaria: An Outline For Beginners

"But still, broadly speaking rare things will cost a lot and popular things cost extra over and above their respective level of rarity. Good examples of the later are German helmets, which are not excessively rare but extremely popular. This popularity drives up the price because there are people who collect them by the dozens. For more easily collected militaria, try items that are not subject to the competition of crowded collector’s niches – maybe British helmets or German Luftwaffe (air force) pilot’s caps. It’s funny that a Luftwaffe helmet or visor hat will cost well over thousand dollars but a good pilot’s cap can be bought for a few hundred. And yet the pilots and their aviation gear were the heart and soul of Luftwaffe air operations. So there is always something interesting around that can be collected for a reasonable value.

One last note regarding what to collect, and that relates to what I call “hyped” items. These are items for which people have developed some kind of fascination which exaggerates their importance. Hyped items are often far more expensive than would normally be justified.

One possible example of this is Normandy Camouflage German helmets. Especially since Saving Private Ryan came out, collectors – and especially new collectors – have become infatuated with acquiring German helmets that were “there.” Because a certain pattern of colors hand-painted over a regular German helmet is known as having been a pattern used by German troops fighting in the Normandy region, any helmet with that color scheme is immediately called a “Normandy Camo” and its price skyrockets. Of course this has encouraged dishonest people to take genuine helmets and re-paint them using those colors. It can be difficult to tell the difference and in any case, it is questionable whether people should pay extra even for the real thing. Advice for beginners: stay away from hyped items. They will still be around after you learn more and they often should be left to the specialists who deal with them on a regular basis. "

                Paddy,

What's relevent is the point that sometimes there is hype about how valuable a given helmet should be.
My helmet is going to stay mine. I know the history and what on it is authentic and what isn't.
The soldier's name is still intact. If I pass it on to someone, they'll receive the immediate history, before and after photos, and even the leather remnants of the liner, etc.
We'll never know the real past history of this helmet. I do know that when this helmet was issued, it looked pretty much as it does now.
As I've said over and over, I'm not a collector and I'm not going to sell it.
I own it and I'll do what I want with it.
I love the way it looks now, and I will continue to enjoy it for as long as I choose.
And I really don't think the serious collecting community will mourn it's disappearance from their world. They had two chances to buy it on ebay, and they, apparently, didn't want it.
                It's mine LOL!

                Jim

Well my point is about its history not about the hype over helmets(which i agree with you on that score) but if your happy with your restored lids thats the main thing!i think its a a pity its lots its history but thats just me i guess!

why do you want the helmets to look like new? I personally like the original helmet like he was better then the restored version I mean it looks like an repro. Leave the helmets like they are its the history behind them that makes the difference to me.

Here's a good one for all you Hard Core don't touch it leave it alone. When I was a kid sometime in the mid 1970s living in Vermont, I picked up a WW1 Helmet (M18 I belive) at an Flea Market for something like $15. or $20. With the help of my Stepfather I painted it Gray and we hand painted WW2 national shields on it for me to Army with my friends. I had this thing kicking around with me years later when I got involed in WW2 re enacting and I then sandblasted, relined and repainted it Black thus turning it into a Early SS helmet for the use at the Old Great Western Gun Show in Calif for thier custom contest..... Years later I went and restored it back to a WW1 camo pattern and it now sits somewhere in a box in storage.... Now you all have someone else to Kick Around for screwing with History.

And leave Jim alone on his Great job of restoring something that's going to stay in his collection to enjoy and let him , myself and others that restore items worry about in the future.

Guess either side is well set in their opinions. I'll go to the grave convinced original items be left original. Me personally, I have almost 100 combat version, German helmets. Dozens of visors. Much much more. Some helmets are near minty's right down to relics. Maybe Jim and other restores of original items, actually do me and the purests a justice by altering originals. Simply put, the more originals you guys kill, THE MORE VALUABLE MY ORIGINALS BECOME. So boys, keep scraping off all those original decals and paint. Keep the squirt cans flowing. Keep on lick'in and stick'in those fake decals. Too bad your ruining it for the next generation. But who cares. Its all about instant gradifaction, isn't it?

Your Hoarding them and Yelling there aren't many left in the world. Now haw about kickin some down to me so I can throw them into the Bead blaster and Paint Booth

2 HELMETS. m35 reissue, chicken wire. Second m40 size 68 winter camo. NOW HERES A PUREST POINT OF VIEW! Mid 1980's. A biker guy found the wire helmet. Came to me, asked if I could air brush, his club logo. I dam near died. Kept offering him and more $. He refused to sell . Ended up trading a real shell repainted Norway, with ss decals. Red dyed German leather. I did all the art work as part of trade. He was tickled silly. Saved another good helmet from instant gradifaction of , have to have it, now, dont give a rats butt about original. But that biker didn't know any better, so in my opinion, he's excused. Collectors should know better..

Second. True winter camo. Neighbors kid brought it back from Germany 1989. Sold it to me. Its a relic. I've had it for 20 years. Its in exact condition as I got it. Where's all that detoration some keep talking about? Only way mother earth is getting it back as iron ore, is if someone decides to hang it on a fence post, for the next 45 years.

Well Max, I'm in my sixties. Been collecting over 50 years. Have donated some important finds to good causes. If I were to kick a free bee, ones way, perhaps forum member, ApathyL, would get it way before you. I'm sure he would show them the respect they deserve. Even the relic. Zeek
