Hello jager17,
Can you tell me if the medal you have is the early bronze over brass version or the later bronze over zinc type. It's been my experience that the light soap and water method followed by drying with a hair dryer set on low works well on the first type mentioned. I would not do the same for the zinc based item.
Have you a photo you can show? Another option might be to give it a light cleaning/coating with Renaiasance Wax which will often clean off marks without actually removing the patina.
Such actions would be dictated by the degree of need so a photo for us to judge by would be of assistance.
Regards,
Stu

Hello there,
This is a zinc based example and I would leave it as is.

Don't clean the medal!!!!!!
Hello there, I agree with William on this subject of cleaning medal. Never clean the medal!!!! Please leave this medal alone. If you want to clean this West Wall and as result it will be ruined and its value go down. I do own a early version of the West Wall medal. My medal was in pristine condition even with original ribbon. Thanks! James

to my understanding getting of a stain like oily fingerprint is not ruining anything. I would just get a fine cotton cloth and wipe it gently of, you will never damage it, and also never put it under water.... I always handle my medals with a fine cloth hence i dont have gloves and yea you wont have to worry. I believe leaving it with that print on it is what it will have it depreciate in value over time. It also looks like it has zinkpest developing on it too, but yea a good wipe with a fine cotton cloth will do a good job
Cheers, Les.

I am generally in the mild cleaning camp. By that I mean a drop of hand soap in a bowl of warm water. Then I use my fingers to very gently rub and rinse very thoroughly. I pat dry then use computer clean air to blow off any remaining moisture. Dish soap contains ammino acids that are more likely to damage something. In the case of this metal it's a finger print alright but it has eaten through the outer layer of finish, there is nothing you can do.
