rust stains on a Demjansk shield

Hello, I will be soon an happy owner of a Demjansk shield. It has unfortunately some rust stains, and I noticed this is quite common on these shields.
Any tested soft method to reduce such stains without affecting the shield?
    Thanks Matt

Matt. Form a conservation point of view. Unfortunately there is really nothing that can be done with out further risk of doing more damage. From the ones that I have seen the finish is onion skin like. I would not advise polishing buffing or scrubbing. I woulsd suggest using a soft cotton cloth. Lightly wipe off any finger prints or grime. Then I would apply a very thin coat of Ren Wax. Be careful not to get any ren wax on the wool fabric. If you can keep the humidity between 43-45% .24/7/365 Paul

Matt. If I remember correctly. I think that someone else in Europe found a source for Ren Wax and posted the information. Try a site search.

I agree with Paul here. I would also not attempt to remove the rust. You would likely be even less satisfied with the shield's appearance, after doing that.
