    Rust removal on barrel shroud?

Just picked up an early 4 hole MG34 barrel shroud, got a good deal on it, but the seller didn't give me a heads up about the rust on it. I have some light surface rust on it here and there, but also some more moderate areas. The light rust I can get at with 0000 steel wool/brass wool and WD40, but I'll need a more aggressive method on the moderate rust areas, will probably have to follow up with some Oxphoblue cold blue to finish up, but any recommendations for the areas that are worse? I have heard that naval jelly works good??? I also have some areas I need to get to inside the shroud which will be more difficult. Chris..

    rust...

I've heard an old method is to oil the spot good and rub it with the edge of a piece of soft pine wood....that should get the worst, then you can finish it off with your fine steel wool and cold blue. Whatever you do, I hope it cleans up nice for you.....best, rich

Try wd 40 and a copper coin, the coin is hard enough to remove the rust but to soft to scratch the steel .

There are a number of ways to go at this right and a thousand ways to do it wrong.

The result (after doing it right) will be determined by the depth of the rust that is now on it.

Essentially the WD-40 advice is real good. There are 50 more products that you can use including Kroil and just kerosene....but WD-40 is good as well. Also the advice about the copper is good....I would spring a few bucks for some bronze wool and or one of the copper or brass bristle tooth brush sized brushes...all can found at the hardware store....

Use the oil first and often while lightly working with the brass wool or brush. You can wipe off the brass residue with more oil and a cloth.

No need to cold blue unless it was really messed up. The key thinkgs are to work the rust down or off, make the rust inactive (oil and removal) keep the metal oiled or waxed...and some measure of proper storage.
