    health issue

    On a totally different note,
be aware that mold is not healthy for humans to be around, and that some molds found right here in the USA are considerered deadly.

I always try and tell people this because there was a time that I did not know that, and worked with mold remediation on books without knowing this.

I would be careful about keeping any thing moldy out in the open, and not sesquestered as mold spores will spread as soon as the humidity allows it to.

I have also had success with washing WWII battle dress tunics in Woolite and then allowing them to air dry. It will be necessary to gently pull the material back into shape as the item dries but once dry the results are very rewarding. But again, you will need to make a risk assessment as to whether or not any attached insignia will be adversely affected by the moisture.

Lastly, I did take a German M36 tunic to the drycleaners with great results but it was as a last resort as the tunic had been used by a movie prop company and they applied an artificial dirt/grime compound (...)
      luck.
If its not the "one of a kind" museum item I also try one of these methods! Many uniform- and fieldgear was washable when it was maufactured so why not to wash them once again ?? O.K., not at 90 C and not with modern super-white detergence, but gentle warm water etc will not harm these items more then mold & co ... . And if I deside that too much water would be no good idea I took uniforms to a dry cleaner... o.k. "only" post war gear, but also quite rare and with ink stamping that should not go off. Afterwards all stains and shrinkles where gone but the stamping was still there ...

      Good luck!
