    Thoughts on my visor stand.

    Hi guys,

I would like some experienced opninions on my visor stand i made to fit my cap. The leather sweatband touches the cloth i put on it so its not in contact with the lacquer. I also have it stored in an ikea cabinet, with some fresh lavender in a little container hidden to have just a touch of smell of it to keep away the moths. Im seeking some advice from you guys out there.

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards, Les.

Nice and period looking,i.e. like something you'd see in a 30s-40s era German clothier's shoppe! To me that makes a stone mint one like that display more authentically.Making it out of cedar might not be a bad idea,I've seen this in older haberdashery shops myself, for displaying Fedoras and Stetsons....

I think from aside sticking your cap in an airtight bubble you have done a really nice job on the stand. It should work fine keeping your hat displayed. Very nice job on the stand by the way.

Good basic concept...now add leather over the cloth with the staples as moisture might rust them, and stain the sweatband, or could srcatch the sweatband. A soft suede same color as the liner would be good. , maybe run a strip of the white thin packing foam for mailing that comes in sheets thats about 1/8th of an inch thick. and glue it with some contact spray adhesive over the white cloth you have there now. Then you might put the suede over the foam. , You could hump up the top side with some cotton batting or whatever you have on the flat at the top..to have the sweat diamond rest on it. Upholstery tacks or furniture tacks with heads could be placed on the underside neatly made of brass..to hold the suede , like on furniture. Thats my suggestion. Without a split top and a wooden screw ajuster like on a hat stretcher, each hats form will have to be made to fit, or the form could be smaller in diameter,so you dont have to cut each different every time you make one for a display and just ajust the padding on the edge for each, thicker or thinner.. so it will cover different sizes of hats. You have a good idea, soon you will be in business. I was a machinist, and my brothers a designer who invented the pac -n-play for kids for graco childrens products. you asked for it. pretty professional work id say. kudos.I like the angled connection to the top. Ive have an idea for helmets display i am working on. This is your prototype first article id say. Oh...also round the edge some on the top part of the form (a radius)so it wont leave a mark or catch.you could use a router, or a sander , as it wont be seen .. so id say youre almost there....if you take my suggestions let us see the finished product later after you rework it...(if you do) You will start getting orders soon . Id say price should be around 29-39.00 each. Plus S&H (you can send me my commission later...hahah

Thanks Guys! I also made stands for my helmets, so when displayed the actuall weight of the helmet is not supported by the leather liner but by the dome so it just rests on the steel. Hope you like it.

              Cheers, Les.

This guy has come up with a simple and cheap adjustable option. Might be worth you buying one and use it as a template?

You might want to round the block at the top, so it wont interfere with liner tips on helmets (maybe make it slightly smaller)where the now square corners may hit. That way it will work on transitional helmets where the liner tabs strings are tighter. That way you wont leave marks on the tabs over time. I use the paper towel vertical stands often found at thrift stores. My new design is going to be different than any currently made for helmet displays. You see helmets take up space to display and you are limited by the diameters to how close they can be shown side by side. The base may need ajusting so the helmets less apt to tip if bumped. Some of that non slip stuff for under rugs that comes in rolls may also keep the helmet from shifting without sticking to the top over time. Practical use by collectors feedback also will help you improve any items over time, as ideas are one thing, but when you start using something , if it has any short falls in design later you can work out the bugs, then call it :NEW, AND IMPROVED... Dont let age be any excuse. find your passion, and take a stab at it. Who knows what other collectors idea products you may develop. Nice work. Then you need a source of cheap labor, materials , and the tools to manufacture the products.

I've seen many . . . but in the end, they are all made of wood. Wood can be o.k., but stainless steel is better. Make something in stainless steel, and then you might be onto something . . . oh, and you can ask PaulR about why I mention this.
