Mildew problem

I bought a cheap tunic in poor condition recently that cloth is rotting in some places, and it smells of mildew. I assume that the cloth is rotting because of moisture conditions. Does anyone know a safe way to prevent the damage from getting worse, and more importantly to get rid of the smell?

i would definitley put it in the driest place in you house with a de-humidifier in that room
