Whats the best type of cloth to dust of medals in display cabinets? Likewise is polish a bad idea for the cabinet itself?

use a soft paint brush

Don't put polish or any such chemical substances on the shelves of the cabinet and/or any areas with which your medals, etc. will make contact or even be near. There's no telling what such chemical fumes and out-gassing could do to your medals over time.
