    Dust protection in IKEA cabinet

    Hi fellow members. Since I have my IKEA Detolf cabinet, I have the problem of cleaning the dust . I know that displaying a big number of medals in a cabinet has the drawback of cleaning the dust from time to time , but as far as possible I'd like to prevent dust build up on the cabinet's shelves. What it's clear is that the dust invades my cabinet through the spaces between the glass door and the edge of the other glasses. So, has anyone any method or idea to protect a collection from dust? Any kind of tape or stripes to cover up those spaces?

    I think previous threads have said that you shouldnt seal the case as it can build up gas or something. Thats why the detolf is good, its cheap, protects the items, and isnt air tight.


    This is a problem i will soon encounter as well (my collections pretty new so hasnt had too much dust build up) and prefer not to handle all the items and clean them all the time.

      Yep. You are right. I didn't realise that it can build up gas if I seal the cabinet... Maybe it's better to be cleaning the collection every 3 months or 2. That's the price you have to pay if you want to show the collection displayed in a cabinet!

            Oh yes, The old dreaded dust problem . A displays biggest problem. Not too much that can be done. One thing to help out is to make sure that if the room has an air exchange to place a fitler over the air vent. It's is also wise to keep the floor/carpet clean in the room that your display is in. Of course never use any thing like pledge, or dusting wands that have a chemical teated fabic. These chemicals will cause damage to your items in the long run . A good old cotton cloth is best. Even the museum that I work at. We close down a week a year to clean house. Both inside cases and out, and we change fitlers 3-4 times a year. House cleaning cleans the floors daily. Yes, do not seal off any display case. Even museums have display cases with vents in them. I clean my at home cases every 6 -8 months, or when needed. Hope this helps. Paul

                Just give up on prevention and dust your things once in awhile.

                  Is your display case in a main room? If not in a main room, why don't you cover your display case when you are not showing it to keep the dust level down.

                    Hi Ralph. The idea of covering the display is nice, but that would be interesting when I'm on vacation and away. But when I stay home, I like to see my collection and let others see it. Actually, there's not too much dust, so I think the best idea is to dust from time to time my pieces (4-5 months) and when I'm away, I will cover the collection with something.

                        My one detolf is fairly full, so I just take out all the items gently with some gloves and set them down. Then I take some glass cleaner and clean the shelves and the outside.

                          As for dealing with dust, it's also good to remember that dust attracts moisture which is also not good for collections. It seems that everything we must do to prevent one problem, such as providing ventilation, in turn causes another problem, and on and on...

                            nah but seriously iv never been able to stop dust so just dust bout twice a year maybe a bit more if im bored!!

                              Yes Paddywhack. That's what I do. Dust the collection from time to time, and meanwhile, enjoy having in your hands all that stuff you're really proud of!
