    cleanable clasp?

Is this clasp cleanable in your opinions so that i would shine as new? It looks heavy worn and battered by time...I dont think its zinc.

I dont have any experiences with renovations...

mdj. Why do you want to clean it and remove history from that badge?
I am sorry mdj do not take it personally. I just responded to another artifact clean question
What is with peoples obsession on cleaning artifacts? As a conservator I don't get it. If you clean it and remove any character. It's not going to add dollar value to it but cleaning it. It look good! kind of been there look.
I do not buy shiny medals, and I do not know many that do. Paul

If that is zinc, why do I see all the bronze color in the first pic? An old flat dull grey zinc piece shouldn't reflect any light, should it? Ammersee

I wouldnt do it. Its frowned upon for the most part and you'll just be pissed with yourself if it doesnt turn out right. IMO, thats beautiful black patina you have there.

I also thought this is a buntmetal piece but with heavily patina....

Too be honest, i prefer medals to have a sheen to them. I'm not a big fn of patina...although i did just buy an EKII off the e-stand yesterday with enough patina to age 5 EKII's!

If you like sheen I would suggest a buffer with some rouge. That'll get it shiney and pretty.

Unfortunately your clasp won't be worth as much to knowledgable collectors but what the heck, screw history, you are the one that needs to be happy with it.

                      Good luck,

                      Tony

Maybe he isnt looking to sell it in the future and doesnt care what the value to other collectors is?

I like the pieces that are lightly used or unissued because i prefer to see what it looked like originally. Also to keep them looking like that. I leave them how I get them though, dont clean it to achieve a certain look.

So the buffer and rouge idea wouldnt quite achieve what i want

Yep, you're right Jimmy. It's tough to silver plate that old zinc without a layer of copper. Do you have the Caswell flash copper plating kit? It's on my wish list. Ammersee
