Yellowing document storage?

Hi,

I just got this original Thiel factory document to display with my Thiel Werkschutz PPK. As you can see, the document is yellow/ed. I guess the paper is of an acid kind. The photo doesn't show as much yellow as it actually has. Luckily, the yellowing is even.

what is the best possible way to preserve this document and still be able to view it? Mylar sleeve and then I could frame that if I want to?

If you are going to frame it take it to a professional who will use acid-free matt boards and UV protected glass. Also keep it away from strong natural (sunlight) and artificial light sources. You can also get alkaline buffered backing boards that will absorb some of the acidity. You can't stop the paper ageing, but you can slow it down.

Yes, BrianK method is the correct way to go. Several people that I know, and even large galleries have several copies made and framed for display. They keep the original in a safe area to prevent any possible further damage. These items would be strore in an acidfree enviroment.

I think i'm convinced to copy it and then store it properly.

But I must say, that there is no reason to only go to a framing shop to frame it with UV stopping glass.

From building custom LCD projectors,
I can tell you that you could save 200 dollars by framing it yourself by going to the hardware store and buying window replacement. The UV proof windown replacement is lightweight and easy to cut. They have it in all sizes. The only down side is I believe it has a slight greenish or bluish tint. But it's extremely cheap compared to going to a frame shop and saying, "I need this framed and UV proof".

would a frame shop use the same stuff or do they have a perfectly clear UV stopping glass available?

If you are just displaying a copy no need to have an archival frame and mount item. Paul

Making a copy & keeping the original in safe storage is a good idea. That way you don't have to worry about deterioration or theft. If the document is a standard size you can just slip it into an inexpensive ready -made frame. You can make the frames yourself, just requires an investment in time & materials. I have done it for some of the smaller & cheaper items.

Try Wei To #10 aresol spray. It slows down acid aging for several hundred years. They also provide a "how to use" tape when you request it.
Wei To paper acid treatment is what the Smithsonian Institute uses on paper including the US Declaration of Independance.

Yes, there is a document spray that can be used. To put spraying a document into perspective. Just a few things that goes on behind the colsed doors. First all documents papers have been tested. All ink is also tested. Then all paper surfaces are cleaned and prepaired. If any of the above steps do not pass these test. The spray is not applied. Wither Wei To#10 spray is used or any other spray is used. These sprays are non reversable. So please use caution. Paul
