To remove or not to remove, that is the question!

Hi guys-- I'm pasting a thread from the helmet forum that has turned into an impromptu conservation question. We believe these decals were augmented post-war, so should one remove the overpaint and hope for the best with the decals, or leave as is? All opinions are welcome

I once owned a book , autographed by H.G. Wells....on the next page, the child who owned it in 1887, signed their name.....under that, another person signed their name in 1932....I would never have thought to erase the other signatures, as they added to the history of the book...

I think the "augmentation" is part of the charm.....Perhaps the soldier did it, after the repaint....Perhaps the vet did it...perhaps the vet's child did it....You'll never know.
Since the decals appear to be original (at least the adler...) why take the risk of destroying them?

    Cheers,
    Bob.
I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.....

I agree with Bob on this one. It's better left alone, I'd say, and that is the answer.
