A couple of forum members on the WAF have asked me to address the humidity levels. It's Spring here in the Upper Mid West. Soon the dreaded high levels of humidity are fast approching. Levels higher that 45% are approching high dangerous levels of potential damaging effect of your collection. The high levels of humidity will help rust to take hold of items. Humidity can cause items to separate. It will promote mold, mildew, and warping of items, and a host of other problems. Since most of us do not have a separate h vac system in our houses to control this problem. We have to rely on the old fashion dehumidifier (look at it this way the low hum can put on to sleep). If your collection is in its own room and the room has a door. Place the dehumidifier in that room. In the opposite side of the room place a humidity gauge. Get in the habit of checking it daily. It would be advised to place a small fan in the same room. Put the fan on a timer so it turns on 2 times a day, and runs on low levels to circulate the air(2-3 hrs.). In a closet, place some selica gel trays to dry up moisture. or another product that can be purchased is a Closet Dehumidifier by Willert. When the gel crystals turn colors. Place the crystals on a old cookie sheet, and dry them in the oven. Just don't dry them while some one is baking during the same time. NOT GOOD TO MIX THEM. Hope this helps Paul

Try a couple of containers of "Damp-Rid" throughout the season - it has worked well for me in the past. It's about $5.00 a container, and I get mine at the local home improvement store . . .

I have a gun safe and have had to deal with the humidity here in Illinois for years. I finally bought a product called a "Golden Rod" which cured the problem. The Golden Rod plugs in and produces a very small amount of heat. By raising the temperature only slightly in the safe the moisture stays away. One could do the same thing with a cabinet that was fairly tight and a small light bulb. Ammersee
