Zinc rot transefer has not been proven 100%. It has been supected to transfer from one piece to another. Zinc rot research has been going on for some time. There is some very stong evidence to support metal transfer from one to another. It is a type of corrosion that mainly attacts zinc medals, and some brass. It not a virus so you can't catch it. One test results had 1 known infected medal placed in a controlled case with 2 non infected. With in 3-4 months both medals showed zinc rot. There is no perminate cure only temporary fixes. Zinc rot travels throught(inside) metals. It spreads within the actual metal. Museums and conservators have spent thousands of dollars researching this with no solid cures. In short I would advise against it. Paul

Sorry, but I just had to scream again. As much as I am always drawn to archival issues, related news has lately had the strange effect of making me scream. Hopefully, this is just a temporary effect and I'll get over it soon enough.

Chris Sorry I didn't mean to make you scream again! Sometimes I hate to be the bearer of bad news. I just wish it was all easy. If we want to keep our things looking great. Plus keep up the top $$ value on our things. We should take our hobby items serious. Like I say we all spend lots of hard earned money on our toys. When I sell my things I want top dollar.

I certainly do agree that it's best to always know and respect the facts, and I do, of course, always really appreciate all the great info you provide. I'm already storing, displaying, and preserving all of my collection in every archivally-safe we we've all discussed here. I'm also really all the more relieved to be doing that.

So, the truth is that I'm never to tired of hearing whatever it takes to know everything. All the latest scienctific info is always welcome. So, keep that information coming, no matter how much screaming we all have to do along the way. After all, the worst screaming would occur, some day, if we didn't know all this stuff now.

          Thanks again,

          Chris

Is zinc rot easily identified? I have a tank badge that i know is zinc and 1 other piece i believe to be zinc. Normal rust on metal is red or brown. I have seen pictures of items with zinc rot and usually its just a lighter grey and appears flakey.

So what does the zinc rot look like and are their any early signs to tell if it is developing?

Yes, I would say that zinc pest is quite easily identifiable. It is a white powdery substance that develops on the surface of an item made of and/or containing zinc. I would post a photo of a zinc pest infected item, but I can't post pictures at this time.
