Patina?

Does anyone know or a ballpark guess on how many years does it take for patina to form on medal?I looked at a IC 1st class that was Cased today and it had patina on it.Told i would give them 375 for it.They are going to get back to me.

On silver, or nickle silver. You can artifically age pintina with in 36 hours time frame. It will look like a 70 year old pintina. Paul

Dan46 Some people use several different methods of artificialy aged pieces. The methods come very close to original patina. I have seen experts fooled by these methods. It is usually had to tell if it was age artifically. However some times this artifical methods produce a blotchy effect. Paul

Paul is right, there are different methods that can be used to quickly form an artificial patina. The amount of time it takes for a natural patina to form will depend on how an item is stored and the atmospheric conditions where it is kept, how often it is handled, in what manner and by whom, and other factors. Some WWII crosses will have a near-black patina, others still look like they were made yesterday.
