I have an early HJ buckle which has some rust smears here and there. Since it's a chrome buckle, I have to use a mild treatment to clean it. Any suggestion?

BKG- Make sure the chrome is not scratched or peeling off. Take a magnifier and look closely to see if there is metal showing. If there is medal is showing Do Not USE ANY CLEANER. The cleaner may react with the medal causing more problems. Without seeing the buckle I would asume the medal is rusting below the chrome. When yo apply a chrome cleaner you are polishing of the chrome itself. Chrome is nothing more than a very thin film applied to a metal surface. If the chrome has been scratched it has already had some of the thin chrome skin scraped off.
Some commercial store bought cleaners will strip off old chrome very quickly. If you can post again after you look at the buckle with an magnifier to see what is happening. Paul
