Is starch in old clothing harmful?

I have a USMC P44 blouse that has a lot of starch in it. My question is does anyone know if starch is harmful to the preservation of old clothing items. The blouse is super stiff and it seems like the starch has faded the green of the shirt a little bit. I am thinking of rinsing out the shirt under lukewarm water in the shower to get the starch out and then ironing with a towel over it.

Leaving old starch in clothing is not a good idea. Old starch made before 1955 were made mostly with potato, wheat, rice, and plant material arrowroot. These items produced the starchy material used in clothing starch. Today it is mostly polymers in starch.
The old starch made before 1955 is a potential magnet for bugs. and other mold spores that will live on and in your garmet and distroy the fabric. If you want to remove it from you garmet it is easy to do. The old starch will come out in water. Rinse in cool water with no soap. May neet to rinse twice. Paul
