    Just a short note:

I got a SWB which I brought back to original condition with Autosol - a paste for cleaning aluminium.

I think the result was pretty good.

Wow, the badge looks quite striking now

What about the loss of patina, the aged look of the medal- is this an issue?

I have a Silver wound badge which could use a lift... but should I? Will this effect the price if I sell down the road?

          cheers,

          jamie

Well - some collectors say it's a CRIME to polish an old badge.

Personally I'd rather have a nice badge - and I'm sure it will affect the price positively if sold.

              Hello there,

My logic is simple; to each their own. Its your badge, do with it what you please. it may make a difference come selling time if you have a chance to upgrade. Enjoy the items, enjoy the hobby. Sure plastic surgery isn't for all women, but most look better in the end. I personally leave things the way they are but I will treat a badge in need with a 24-hour Vaseline soak - it doesn't harm anything. I think those dull grey zinc badge that were late-war produced are boring, and I like the end result after a Vaseline treatment.

The results brought it back to damn near un-issued!

Personally I like a little wear on my originals, and have had much success with the 24-hr vaseline brush down.

Cleans up any bad zinc corrosion, but still leaves a nice patina.

I agree - but sometimes it is necessary to give a helping hand.

How do you think a 24 hour vaseline treatment would help this GWB ?

I don't think Vaseline would do much in that GWB's case, but you could try. Might be better with your Autosol - if you where looking to restore it to "new."

All depends on how ya like your patina

I surely don't like it when it looks like it has been dug up in the neighbours garden

As I have said in many past WAF conservation threads on the zinc pest problem. No amount of scrubbing, WD-40, Vaseline, grease, cooking oil, or anything else that you may believe will stop zinc pest dead in its tracks. This is not going to happen.

The actual composite of zinc materials is very poor quality materials to start off with in the war manufacturing era. Large amounts composite impurities in time break down and start the corrosion effect. In the conservation world zinc pest is a cancerous zinc problem, and cannot be changed by applying sealers Vaseline, grease, and varnish. Most of the time zinc pest starts from the inside the medal and travels outward to the surface. You cannot correct poor manufacturing methods prenatally. Sometimes coating the zinc medals with these products can actually make the problem worse in the long run.

                            true!

In regards to the GWB, it couldn't hurt but don't expect a huge difference in appearance!
