How to safely open a letter

My grandmother gave me a huge grouping of stuff from when she was in the WAVES, and one of the items is a letter from the Office of Naval Officer Procurement that is currently sealed in the envelope. I'm sure it was opened at one point, but the envelope is completely intact (meaning she didn't rip it open) and I'd like to keep it that way. I think it was probably resealed by moisture at some point.

Whatever's in there seems much stiffer than a letter, so I'd really like to open it up and have a look. Is there any way to dissolve the seal of the glue? I know on TV people do it with steam / irons, but does that really work? I can't find any good sources that say one way or the other regarding something this old.

    Hi Steven, steam will work.

    Cheers, Ade.

Steam worked perfectly, thanks! An invitation to an orientation party is what was inside. The "enclosed card" is missing so she obviously opened it, but heck if I know how she did it without ripping the envelope at all! Maybe she steamed it too.
