    Preservation and Portapees?

    Hello everyone,

Earlier I posted a thread asking how many collectors add portapees to 1st model Luftwaffe Daggers. I also asked about the period photo-verified variations in the way portapees were actually attached to these daggers.

Okay, well I did finally decide to add a portapee to my 1st Model Luftwaffe. Yes, it looks great, as I thought it would. In the process of putting it on the dagger, I was aware of how abrasive those aluminum wire portapee threads can be, so I am happy to say that I did that without incident, as well.

However, being the conservation-minded collector that I am compelled to be, I must admit that I did immediately begin thinking about possible long-term effects of a portapee, merely as a precautionary thought. Yes, I know it's always good to ask, rather than just assume and be sorry later.

So, here goes. Have any of you had any adverse or damaging long-term effects resulting from the simple contact of the aluminum wire portapee threads against the leather of a dagger handle? I know it seems that in a case where something is specifically made for something, maybe who should care. However, my dagger originally didn't have one, and I added it (to fully accessorize it), as many collectors reasonably do. The dagger and dagger handle are currently in excellent condition. I just don't want to unwrap the portapee some day, only to find that the period-correct portapee has also added some nonperiod damage. In my assuming opinion, I would say that there should be no adverse reactions results from the contact of the aluminum with the leather. However, I know that there are many of you out there who may know more about this from experience--such as from unwrapping a portapee which has really been on there for decades. Some of you may just know something about the long-term effects of aluminum against leather, in general.

Thanks for all who may respond.

    Chris

P.S. I originally wasn't quite sure exactly where this post should go. The first one about wear and presentation obviously went in the dagger section. However, I am unsure about where this thread may get the most responses from those with the experience on the issue. So, I may also post a link to this in the dagger section.

I'm actually glad I also posted a link to this thread over in the dagger forum, since it's actually gotten some good responses there from some of the dagger collectors using portapees.

So, just in case any of you dagger collectors have an interest in my conservation concerns over portapeed leather-handled daggers, that's where you can so far look for some good opinions/info.

    Chris
