    ....speaking of muslin.....

    I've been following many of the conservation discussions with great interest and decided to replace a lot of the cotton and paper backing that i've been using, with archival muslin.
    In my search, both locally (at framing shops) and online, i've found a place that has a 65” x 48” pieces of pre-washed, unbleached muslin for 10.95 US. I think it's a decent price.

      Excellent, I need to buy some more and that will save me a trip. I also thikn I'll get some of their archival tissue paper for medal ribbon.

        Yes, I say getting it all over with at once is surely the best way to deal with it.

          Muslin

          Bob, you can also buy unbleached muslin at your local fabric store. It's cheaper that than $10.95 a yd. sometimes about 1/3 -1/2 off that price. Most stores have it on sale twice a year often up to 40% off. So stock up. When it comes off the bolt is has a starching material in it. Simply wash it in the washer twice. Run the complete washer cycle aprox.10 min. DO NOT USE LAUNDRY SOAP. Air dry, or if too wrinkled touch up with a steam iron. Most museums that I work at do this. Also you can use fleece in rikor mounting frames. Fleece is a bit thicker, but it has a great velcro type surface to it. It's great to hold metals in place. Fleece will not attract moisture. If you buy fleece at a fabric store again wash it the same way as the muslin. You can pin it over any ethafoam for a nice smooth surface. Paul

            Thanks for the tips, Paul......I just thought that these pieces were a good buy, because they were only 10.95 for 5 1/2 feet by 4 feet, rather than priced by the yard.
            I didn't know about not using detergent, so thanks for THAT tip!...

              I just washed some muslin according to your instructions, and everything turned out just fine.
